How Wood Movement Affects Cabinet Doors

Wood is a natural material, and even after it's milled into a cabinet door it keeps responding to the air around it — expanding when humidity rises, contracting when it falls. This seasonal movement is normal and expected, but if you don't design around it, it shows up as cracked paint, stuck doors, or gaps at the joints. Understanding how and why wood moves is the key to doors that stay flat, close cleanly, and look right for decades — which matters especially in the humid Gulf Coast climate we serve across Texas and Louisiana.

Why wood moves at all

Wood is hygroscopic — it absorbs and releases moisture from the air until it reaches equilibrium with its surroundings. As it takes on moisture in humid months it swells; as it dries out in cooler, drier months it shrinks. This happens for the life of the wood, no matter how well it was dried at the mill.

Crucially, wood moves far more across the grain (in width) than along it (in length). A solid panel might change measurably in width from summer to winter while its height stays essentially fixed. Good door construction accounts for that difference — it doesn't try to stop the movement, it gives the wood room to move without damaging the door.

How frame-and-panel doors are built to handle it

This is exactly why traditional cabinet doors are built as frame-and-panel — a Shaker or raised panel door isn't one solid slab. The center panel 'floats' in a groove in the frame rather than being glued in place, so it can expand and contract freely without pushing the joints apart or cracking.

That floating panel is engineering, not decoration. If a solid-wood panel were glued rigidly into a fixed frame, seasonal expansion would either buckle the panel or split the frame. The floating design lets a stained hardwood door breathe through the seasons while staying tight and square at the corners.

The finish problem: why painted solid wood can crack

Here's the catch with paint. When a solid-wood panel contracts in dry weather, it can pull slightly out of the frame groove, exposing a thin line of unpainted wood — or the paint film bridging the joint cracks along that line. The door is fine structurally, but the finish shows a hairline where the panel meets the frame. This is the most common reason painted solid-wood doors develop lines over time.

The fix is material choice. An MDF panel has no grain and doesn't move with humidity, so a painted door built with an MDF center panel stays smooth and hairline-free far longer. Doors that stick, gaps that appear

Movement also shows up in fit. In a humid spell, doors swell and can start to rub or stick, especially tight inset doors with minimal reveal. In a dry spell, gaps can open up between doors or around inset doors. Small seasonal changes like this are normal and usually settle out as the humidity swings back.

This is one reason inset doors are built with a deliberate reveal — the small, consistent gap around the door isn't just aesthetic, it's clearance for seasonal movement. Overlay doors are more forgiving because they sit on top of the frame with room to spare, which is part of why they're the more common choice.

What you can do to minimize problems

You can't stop wood from moving, but you can reduce the swings. Keep indoor humidity relatively stable — avoid extreme highs and lows — and let new doors acclimate to your home before finishing or installing them. A fully sealed finish on all sides slows moisture exchange and helps the door move more gradually and evenly.
