S4S stands for surfaced four sides. It describes lumber that has been machined smooth on all four long faces — the two wide faces planed to a consistent thickness and the two edges straight-lined so they are square and parallel. In plain terms, S4S lumber arrives flat, uniform, and ready to work, instead of rough-sawn with fuzzy faces and uneven edges the way lumber comes off the sawmill.

The value of S4S is the milling you do not have to do yourself. Turning rough lumber into usable stock requires a jointer to flatten one face and straighten one edge, then a planer to bring it to final thickness. That is time, dust, waste, and equipment.
