MDF, or medium-density fiberboard, is an engineered wood product with a smooth, uniform surface. It is often selected for paint-grade doors because it has no visible wood grain. It is not waterproof, and unsealed edges or sustained moisture can cause damage.
Neither is best for every project. MDF offers a smooth paint-grade surface and consistent appearance. Hardwood provides natural grain for stain or clear finishes and moves as temperature and humidity change. An exact match cannot be guaranteed. Wood species, grain, age, sunlight, previous finish, application method, and batch differences all affect color. A physical sample and test finishing improve the chance of a close result. The person applying the finish should approve the match before the entire order is completed.
Keep doors indoors in a clean, dry, climate-controlled space, supported flat as directed, and away from concrete, exterior walls, direct sunlight, water, and construction moisture.
